Enjoying a hot bath heated by the new combi boiler

What is a Combi Boiler?

A combi boiler has quickly become one of the most popular boilers to install today due to its compactness, energy efficiency and general convenience. It’s called a ‘combination’ boiler as it is both a central heating boiler and water boiler, combined into one unit. Unlike regular and system boilers, combi boilers can heat water on demand, taking and heating its water supply directly from the mains rather than relying on a large hot water cylinder.

Types of Combi Boilers

The majority of UK-installed Combi Boilers are gas however they do also come in oil, LPG and electric:

Gas

If you want to keep your running costs low, gas Combi Boilers are often your best bet if your home is connected to the gas network.

Oil

If your home isn’t connected to the gas network, then your best option is an oil Combi Boiler. Here you will need to store an oil tank outside your home, which your supplier will then refill when it starts to run out.

LPG

LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) also require to be fuelled by a refillable tank outside your home. The gas is made from natural gas/oil extraction and oil refining, creating gaseous hydrocarbons which fuel your boiler.

Electric

An electric Combi Boiler is an alternative for those not connected to the gas network. Rather than being fuelled by oil or gas, electric Combi boilers have an electric element that heats the water as it passes over it. Although these are becoming an increasingly popular option, they aren’t recommended for larger homes as heating the water can become expensive.

Advantages of a Combi Boiler

  • Energy Efficient: new regulation was introduced in 2018 ensuring all Combi Boilers have to be at least 92% energy efficient (hence only 8% waste). This means they are the highest level of efficiency on the market!
  • Lower energy bills: the higher the efficiency the lower the bills! 8% of waste means only £8 for every £100 wasted, or £80 for every £1000. Although this may seem high, when you compare this to a boiler with 75% efficiency, there is over 3x the amount of waste at £25 for every £100 or a huge £250 for every £1000 spent. Boilers are a significant investment, so that extra 20% of energy efficiency goes a long way – not forgetting the small differences we can also be making to help the environment.
  • Quick & cheap installation: being one combined, compact unit, installing a Combi Boiler is much simpler than a Traditional boiler. There is no need for a connection to the attic or additional elements, they can be installed anywhere. This means a quick, easy and cheap installation!
  • Compact fit: Again, no large water tanks or components needed. It can fit pretty much anywhere, hidden neatly in a cupboard rather than taking up lots of space in your home.
  • Hot water whenever you need it: I’m sure we’ve all experienced standing in a freezing cold shower before work in the morning, waiting for the water to heat up. With a Combi Boiler, hot water is heated on demand, so there is no more waiting around for the hot water tank to refill before you can use it!
  • Water pressure: Finally, not only can you have hot water whenever you need it, but you can also have a much stronger water pressure. Traditional boilers use gravity to pull water from the attic water tank, whereas Combi Boilers are connected to the mains.

All in all, Combi Boilers are a great and very popular choice if you are looking to install a boiler today. However, please note that they aren’t as suitable for large households with multiple bathrooms. There is no hot water stored, so the mains water flow will need to split between the rooms, making the pressure lower. Again, this means they aren’t suitable for homes with a weaker mains water pressure.
